A Parkdale man was arrested for alleged New Year’s Eve murder.

On Dec. 31 at approximately 11pm deputies of Ashley County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the 300 block of School Street in Parkdale. Deputies found an injured man, later identified as Jesse Burton.

Burton was transported to Chicot Memorial Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.

Tommy Sturgeon, the Ashley County sheriff, said one of his investigators was notified by a doctor at CMMC around 1am on Jan. 1 that Burton had died of “massive burn inhalation injury.” According to Sturgeon, Anthony Dewayne Brown of Parkdale was arrested and charged with first degree murder on Jan. 1.

According to witnesses the suspect poured gasoline on the victim before setting him on fire. The victim fell in a puddle in an attempt to put himself out.

On Jan. 2 Brown appeared before Judge Sam Pope and a bond was set in the amount of $250,000.

Sturgeon said this is still an on-going investigation and all information will be turned over to Thomas Dean, the Tenth Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney.
